International English Tutoring

We help the high school students in Yunnan China improve their English. After attending the summer camp organized by the Peach Foundation in 2018,  we found that the students there have limited English resources to improve their English, especially in listening and speaking. Since then, we have started a one-on-one English help program. As of now, we have twelve learning groups. The teenager teachers are from Saratoga High School. The students from Yunnan are from three different high schools.

 

The procedure is:

Step 1: If there is a student in Yunnan who wants to get help, we find a student that wants to provide help from our schools.

Step 2: Connect them by WeChat and help them set the first appointment. The students from Yunnan send an article they want help at least one hour before the appointment time. 

Step 3: There is a time difference between California and China. The high schoolers in Yunnan cannot access the internet at school, and they can only come home during holidays and some of the weekends. We usually set a time during (US) 5pm-10pm Friday to Sunday, which is (Yunnan) 8am-1pm Saturday to Monday.

Step 4: They will have a WeChat video call at the first appointment time. The teachers will read the article sent in its entirety for their student. 

Step 5: The teacher and student can set future appointment times by themselves. We can provide help based on their requirements.

 

We appreciate the time and help provided by the teachers. It takes one hour to set up the appointment, prepare the article and video call. 

 

Other ways to help are welcome. One of the ways we found efficient is: the students in Yunnan send the material first. The US teachers can study and resolve the problem and then send it back. The US teacher will also record his/her reading of the material for the student in Yunnan to listen.
